Fulton, Robert - portrait of a man

This miniature portrait is unsigned, but is attributed to Robert Fulton (1765-1815), compare plate 18 in Strickler. His works are rare.

The portrait was painted around 1785-1786. Fulton only painted miniatures in America for a few years and went to Britain in 1787. His later miniatures are not as highly regarded as those painted in America. 

Robert Fulton is more famous as the inventor of the steam-powered ship. For more about him see Robert Fulton The sitter is unknown. 1104

 

 

 

For comparison, here is another miniature, sold by Freeman's in 2006, and believed to be by Robert Fulton. Note the similarity of the pose and the shape of his nose;

He worked in Petersburg during 1786.
