There was initially some thought this miniature portrait, judging by the clothes painted around 1800, had some similarities with the work of James Peale, but this has now been discounted.
However, it is in an American style case with a beaded bezel.
The sitter is unknown.
I had earlier thought it was a portrait of a girl, but a kind visitor has pointed out it seems more likely to be of a boy. This remark was quickly accepted, as indeed the collar worn by the child is much more typical of a boy from the 1790's. 980
